How to Make a Film

To help students and teachers produce their own films, we have created a short online series on How To Make A Film.

Presented by Anthony and Leela, two award-winning SA filmmakers who will give tips on everything from scriptwriting to editing, to help you take your filmmaking to the next level.

Story And Script Development

Learn about the particular elements that are used to make a story more engaging for an audience and how you can develop these into your script.

Shot Lists

A shot list is a guide to the shots you would like to get during production. The shot list should include descriptions about each shot; including shot numbers, shot sizes, shot angles, duration, location and action. We’ll cover more about shots in the camera tutorial.

Camera

When it’s time to start filming, this is what you want to think about. Films are made up of a series of shots. The shots you choose to use should help tell your story. We’ll show you some basic shot sizes you can use.

Do's And Don'ts

There are some common issues that we all face and need to be aware of when making our films. So before you get started, let’s make sure you know what to look out for.

Editing

Editing is the stage where you take all of your shots from the production phase and combine them and bring your story together. It is time consuming but great fun and very rewarding.

About the presenters

Anthony Frith is an editor and sound engineer with a multitude of experience in a variety of different formats, from shorts, TV and web media. His writing and directing work includes the award-winning ABC iview series Lessons From A Middle Age Artist. In 2018, Anthony participated in a twelve-day practical filmmaking workshop in the Peruvian jungle where he made a film under the mentorship of Werner Herzog. This led to an attachment on Werner’s Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin. Anthony was the recipient of the 2019 AIDC’s ACCESS Mentorship grand prize which was a two-month internship at Beach House Pictures in Singapore where he worked on the story team for Discovery’s Ed Stafford: First Man Out. In 2019 Anthony was a Researcher & Associate Producer on McAvoy Media’s Teenage Boss Series 2 for ABC Me.

Leela Varghese is the writer and director of the kind of films beloved by film curators wanting shorts with the comedic appeal & diverse characters that speak to the next generation. In this session, she uses her films Furbulous and Crush as examples. Crush won Best Screenplay at 2019 Tropfest and was part of AFF 2020 Made in Adelaide program.

Leela's feature debut Lesbian Space Princess, which screened at AFF 2024, was the first full-length animated feature made in South Australia and won the Teddy Award at Berlinale 2025 – the longest-running LGBTQ+ prize of any major film festival.

With thanks to the Government of South Australia, Department for Education, SA Power Networks and South Australian Film Corporation.
