AFF goes annual, and first AFF22 films announced!
Almost 20 years since it was established as a biennial event in 2003, the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) is thrilled to announce that it will be become an annual Festival from this year’s presentation in October, following the recent announcement of additional investment from the South Australian Government.
The 2022 AFF will take place over 12 days in from October 19 – 30 at multiple venues across Adelaide. The Festival will then be held annually each October.
To celebrate the news, AFF has also announced that the 2022 Festival Opening Night Film will be the World Premiere of The Angels: Kickin’ Down The Door, an intimate look behind the scenes of one of Australia’s most iconic rock bands.
Featuring never before seen home videos by the band members, the film reminds us that The Angels were a behemoth of the Aussie rock scene and explores the internal tensions that gave us Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?, No Secrets and Marseilles while also rocking the audiences’ socks off.
The Angels: Kickin’ Down The Door was produced with financial support from the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund (AFFIF), a cornerstone of the Festival, which provides equity investment in South Australian screen productions. Writer/Director is Madeleine Parry (director of the Emmy-award winning Hannah Gadsby: Nanette and Emmy-nominated Hannah Gadsby: Douglas) and the film is produced by Peter Hanlon, Martin Fabinyi and Rick Davies.
Opening Night will also feature the World Premiere of the short film Marungka Tjalantananyi / Dipped in Black, written and directed by Derik Lynch and Matthew Thorne. The film was supported by the AFFIF, the South Australian Film Corporation and Panavision.
The Festival is also announcing the premiere of South Australian made sci-fi thriller Monolith, directed by Matthew Veseley, produced by Bettina Hamilton and written by Lucy Campbell. The film is the first to come out of the Film Lab:New Voices – a collaboration between Adelaide Film Festival, South Australian Film Corporation, Screen Australia with in kind support from Mercury CX. Taking place Thursday October 27 and followed by one of AFF's famous after parties, tickets for this World Premiere are on sale now.
AFF is renowned as a platform for new Australian talent and is ranked in industry bible Variety’s international list of ‘50 Unmissable Film Festivals’. It is also the most recent recipient of the Arts SA Ruby Award for Best Festival.

The AFF’s 2022 iteration has already received a record number of submissions from filmmakers, following the remarkable success of the 2020 event which saw a record box office as the local community and the Australian screen industry came together to celebrate cinema, in spite of COVID-19."
As well as The Angels: Kickin’ Down The Door, the 2022 Festival will see World Premieres of around 15 AFFIF titles, including the feature films Talk to Me, directed by Adelaide-based Danny and Michael Philippou, and Soda Jerk’s artwork Hello Dankness.
In addition to the October flagship event, AFF’s year-round activities include AFF Youth, a film festival curated for South Australian students and youth, the AFF Film Club and its new AFF Regional Program Curate Your Own Festival, which will see active engagement of regional communities and screenings at various locations across regional SA.
