A car accident throws Audrey (Moon Choi) and Eli (Son Sukku) together in suburban New Jersey, but Bedford Park is most alive in what happens afterwards - in the tentative, sometimes awkward ways two people begin to make room for one another. Audrey was raised in a Korean immigrant family; Eli, adopted by white parents, has grown up at a different remove from his heritage. Both carry histories of family, emotional damage and han, the accumulated sorrow and resentment that can pass between generations. Stephanie Ahn’s special debut trusts Choi and Sukku’s bodies, silences and gestures to chart a connection that resists conventional romantic machinery. David McFarland’s spacious, unobtrusive photography gives them room to simply exist together, allowing friendship, desire, guilt and love to co-exist without being neatly named. Bedford Park won the US Dramatic Special Jury Award for Debut Feature at Sundance.
