Nothing disturbs the deadpan rhythms of suburban New Zealand quite like an unwanted extraterrestrial pregnancy. Directionless millennial Mary (Hannah Lynch) still lives with her overbearing mum when an awkward sexual encounter with neighbour Boo (Arlo Green) leaves her carrying something decidedly inhuman. As the pregnancy develops at an alarming rate, Mary’s private fetishes collide spectacularly with biological reality and the expectations of parents and medical professionals prove almost as unnerving as what is growing inside her. Mixing practical creature effects and surreal sci-fi with the studied banality of domestic life, this riotous body horror-comedy finds fertile ground in the indignities of reproduction. Beneath the escalating biological mayhem is a gleefully warped satire of bodily autonomy, millennial malaise and the persistent belief that having a baby might finally make you grow up.
