Spun from an enchanting short story by Ursula Wills-Jones, filmmakers Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer take us on a mesmerising adventure. Jimpa (AFF 2025) star Oliva Colman portrays our hero, an unnamed fisherwoman who happily minds her own business but is roundly mocked for being a bit whiffy by the mean-spirited villagers to whom she sells her wares. Chief among them is the snooty wife, played by Australian Elizabeth Debicki, who’s unhappily married to Nabhaan Rizwan’s tailor. She pairs the village’s singles in a surreal folkloric marriage tradition the fisherwoman avoids like the plague. But when their mockery gets too much, the fisherwoman turns to Peter Dinklage’s kindly basket weaver to fashion her a wicker husband, with Alexander Skarsgård bringing the creation to life in a fabulously woven costume. Cue a surprisingly steamy romance and a cautionary tale about not picking on outsiders in this Sundance premiere that’s sure to be an instant cult classic. You’ll fall under its whimsical spell.
