Wilderness

A car accident reunites Allie with estranged school friend Kaz, a field sound recordist documenting a changing natural world. Their escape into Victoria’s High Country becomes an offbeat midlife road movie, as old grievances resurface and two friends discover what can happen when they start listening again.

Approaching 50, Allie (Mirrah Foulkes) is sleepless, overwhelmed and watching the certainties of her comfortable Melbourne life come undone. Her marriage is failing, her career is in jeopardy and her teenage daughter is preparing to leave home. A car accident brings estranged school friend Kaz (Yael Stone) back into her orbit, and soon Allie has joined the idiosyncratic field sound recordist on a trip into Victoria’s High Country.

Kaz is searching for migrating bogong moths, recording the sounds of a natural world in flux, while Allie is mostly looking for an escape. Their unlikely reunion becomes an offbeat midlife road movie through mountain landscapes, country pubs and encounters with strangers, as the freedom of the open road gradually gives way to old grievances and unexpected danger. Against the vast highland landscape, Wilderness brings the personal and environmental together, considering how much can pass us by when we stop listening, and what might change when we start again.
